Winemaker William Hoare

William Hoare first fell into winemaking when lured across the road at the tender age of nine to ‘help’ at Cloudy Bay’s winery with Kevin Judd and James Healy. The magic that William first experienced at Cloudy Bay has made him passionate about winemaking ever since.

To broaden his knowledge and experience base William circled the globe working for winemakers that truly inspired him. His work took him to America, South Africa, France and later Switzerland.

Home for Will has always been Marlborough though. After working a vintage at Fromm Winery in 1998 for Hatsch and Georg it was suggested that he complete a vintage in Switzerland and then return to New Zealand to work for Fromm permanently as assistant winemaker.

This seemed a natural move for Willliam as he appreciated the level of detail and effort that Hätsch and Georg aspired too in the vineyards and winery. Today William takes an active role in managing the vineyards and works together with Hätsch to make wines that echo the different terroir of Fromm’s vineyards.
