Winemaker Hätsch Kalberer
Hätsch's “winemaking-career" started with the love for fine wine. Arriving 1982 in New Zealand from Switzerland, he began a nearly 10 year "apprenticeship" at Matawhero Wines in Gisborne.
A self-confessed "traditionalist" he appreciates classic European styles, and wines with an unpolished expression of vineyard, climate, vintage and people involved.
“It’s the grapes which tell us what to do rather than us forcing them into a preconceived style.”
Hätsch firmly believes the same ideology should apply in New Zealand viticulture as it does in the great wine-regions of the old world.
“That we have to be prepared to put the same manual effort into the vineyard and work with similarly low crop levels. Then our point of difference is our own vineyard location and the age of our vines”.
